Chapter Fifteen

The next day was Saturday. I had no appointments and no medium work of any kind planned. I was spending the day with my sister and her boys at the zoo.

When I arrived at Audrey’s house, it was full-on chaos. I forgot how much energy my nephews had. Audrey was wrestling Dylan into shorts, and Harris was running around, climbing on furniture, and jumping off again. Oy! I was already exhausted, and I had been there less than two minutes. Granted, I hadn’t slept well the night before as I had listened for any sound of an intruder, but the boys quickly drained what remnants of energy I had saved for the day.

I stood back and watched my sister and nephews while wondering what I would be like as a parent. I’d never been much of a kid person, but I did rock the cool aunt thing, though. I bought the fun gifts, and the few times I had babysat them, I brought pizza and cookies. They loved me.

“Harris, stop that. Dylan, let me finish getting you dressed.” Audrey nagged. “Boys, we need to get going.”

Stanley came out from the master bedroom. He looked relaxed and calm. Audrey, on the other hand, was frazzled and stressed. Men got off so easily. Here she was struggling, and he was cool as can be without a worry. A prime example of why I didn’t know if I really want another husband or have children of my own.

“Hey, Jo. I hope you all have fun today.”

“Thanks. What are your plans?”

“Golf.” He kissed Audrey on the check.

Then grabbed Harris off the table, set him on the floor with a scold, and then scooped Dylan up and placed him back in Audrey’s arms. She smiled at him and mouthed, ‘thank you,’ then Stanley saluted her and left. Okay, so I take back my earlier thoughts of him. He was one of the good ones.

With the kids now under control, we got them into Audrey’s car and headed to the zoo. The boys alternated between singing and cheering. It was too loud for Audrey and I to talk much, but that was okay. It was nice to be with them.

I hadn’t been to the Creekview Zoo and Botanical Gardens in a few years. They had made quite a few improvements by expanding some enclosures, adding a few others, and in general, making everything look more natural and less prison-like. They’d also added beautiful, lush plant life and gardens. It was wonderfully done.

Audrey had a wagon to pull the boys in, so they could jump out when we stopped at various exhibits or sit back and admire the animals. It was a warm day, but not too hot. We were still in spring, so the weather was mild. It would almost be unbearable out here in a month or two, with higher humidity levels and temperatures near the upper nineties.

We headed toward the children’s area, following the line of other wagons and strollers. The boys were getting excited.
